Farmhouse Kitchen Ideas
1. SHIPLAP
A white farmhouse kitchen can only be complete if it has shiplap somewhere. When looking at different farmhouse homes, some choose to put it everywhere, but you can also just use it to accent a wall or area. I love the extra character it gives to a space. A kitchen is a great place to add it, because of all the cabinetry it won’t feel like too much. We put shiplap around our pantry entrance just to add a little touch of cuteness. It definitely made the door pop and created such a cute little corner space.

2. ENCLOSED PANTRY
A closed off pantry is a must! As seen in the picture above, we love having an enclosed space with a door that can be shut. It’s up to you how big you want your pantry to be, but I think we can all agree that we want to be able to close the door behind us. You will want plenty of shelving. This is also a great space to put all your appliances that you don’t use on a regular basis, which will free up counter or cabinet space. No matter what, all you choose to store in your pantry only you will know, and your guest won’t. When things get messy while preparing for that family dinner, throw it all in the pantry and close the door. No one will ever have to know.
Another really cool idea that has become very popular over the years is having a separate prep kitchen. Also, used as a pantry. I have wondered how in the world one of our family members could have a spotless kitchen but a warm, fully prepared meal. That was until I learned that she has a separate small kitchen area behind a closed door. Literally has it all. It has a sink, dishwasher, cabinets, ovens, and more. That is a lot of extra money and space to use up so I would only suggest it if your front door were a swinging one. Meaning that you are always preparing and hosting.

3. OPEN SHELVES FOR DECOR
We love having this space to decorate for holidays! Usually in kitchens there are not really places to do that. We had seen a picture that inspired our kitchen shelves. It’s just enough to decorate and add little touches, but not too much that you feel like you wasted the wall space. We LOVE the added character that it brings to our space. If you aren’t doing a new build, adding shelves anywhere in your home is such an easy thing to do. Here are a couple of pictures of our shelves in our home.
This one of our favorite things that we decided to do during our remodel. We have gotten so many compliments on it, and it helps bring some decor into the kitchen.

4. APPLIANCE FREE ISLAND
Making your island appliance free gives you so much more space to food prep or serve your meals. We went back and forth whether or not we should put our kitchen sink/stovetop in our island and I’m SO glad we didn’t. If you have a big family or you like to host parties, you will love the extra space an appliance free island gives you. Not only that, if you are cutting up your vegetables or food prepping someone else can be at the sink utilizing it. Your island can NEVER be too big. We use every square inch when all the family is over. I also like that it’s big enough that I can put some seasonal decor in the middle of it. Below is a picture of our island set up.
Although it is appliance free, we were still able to have seating on the outside. On the inside, we have several drawers that we love for just extra storage. Also, a cabinet door hiding our pull-out trash can. Something else we did which we love is put plug-ins on both ends of our island. So, while we are preparing and cooking, we can bring our electric skillet, blender, mixer, or whatever us out to the big open space. It gives us all the room we need without having to be confined to the counters with cabinets above. Then when we are done, they can go straight back to the pantry, and we have all our counterspace while hosting. The added plugins are also great for when you do want to keep something warm in the crockpot while serving.

5. POT FILLER ABOVE YOUR STOVE
This is something that we decided to do at the last minute, and we are so glad that we did. It is SO NICE and SO CONVENIENT, especially if you have a bigger kitchen. The pot filler allows you to get the water without making the trip across the kitchen. Also, if someone else is at the kitchen sink you don’t have to worry. The pot filler serves the exact same service. I truly didn’t know how much I would love this. The pot filler saves you having to carrying a heavy pot of water to the stove. I 10/10 recommend a pot filler for your farmhouse kitchen. In the picture below, you will see how my stove is away from my kitchen sink and how that makes my pot filler so convenient.
We really questioned if this was necessary to have and let me tell you again, it’s a must!! There are so many different options as well to choose from. We got ours off Amazon and will share the link but just know that I’m sure they have what you are looking for. So, many different features and finishes to choose from.

We hope that some or all of these ideas are something you could see yourself loving too! When it comes to your kitchen, it’s your kitchen. So, it needs to be what you want it to be. I knew several things I wanted after having such a small kitchen for thirty years. I may not have gotten to do them when I wanted but the time came around when I was able to. So, if that’s you and you are doing a new build or a remodel now, just write the things down along the way and then when the time comes, you’ll be ready.
So, much family time involves the kitchen. Really, day to day life. We do have to eat to survive, don’t we? So, that’s just a reminder that the kitchen is the most popular room in the home. We hope that you get yours just right!
